Introduction to Immersion Vibrated Roller Compacted Design Construction

2 PDHs

Immersion vibrated roller-compacted concrete, or IVRCC is a new concept for constructing RCC dams. Simply put, IVRCC is a single RCC mixture that can be consolidated by both immersion vibrators and smooth drum vibrating rollers. This allows a single, durable RCC mixture to be utilized for the dam, exterior dam facing, and interface contacts at foundations and other concrete elements. A single mix and more continuous RCC construction process can improve production and reduce costs.
The range of Vebe consistency of this type of RCC is typically from about 8 to 12 seconds, considerably more workable than in early RCC dams. The transition from extremely dry RCC to stiff IVRCC consistency in dams has allowed several improvements in RCC mixtures and IVRCC can simplify dam construction. The improved workability reduces the tendency for segregation and allows for more effective use of air-entraining, water reducing, and retarding admixtures.
This webinar will trace the trends in RCC mix consistency allowing IVRCC to be feasible for new dams and in dam safety modifications. Design considerations, mixture proportioning requirements, quality control, and construction means and methods will be discussed. Three North American dams will be highlighted to introduce IVRCC for design and construction.
